Learning Support Needs

We support students with a range of difficulties, for example autism spectrum disorders or Asperger’s syndrome; dyslexia, dyspraxia and other specific learning difficulties; mental health difficulties; mobility impairments; sensory impairments; unseen disabilities like epilepsy, HIV, AIDS and chronic fatigue.

If you have a disability, specific learning difficulty or health condition that you tell us about we can arrange the support you are entitled to.  This could include study support, support with exams and assessments and wellbeing and mental health support.  Find out more about how we can support you at www.mmu.ac.uk/student-life/wellbeing/disability.

Information and documentation provided in relation to any health or disability support needs, (including any Education Health Care Plans provided as part of your application) may be shared between the Apprenticeship Unit and the University's Inclusion and Disability Service for the purposes of needs assessment to support your apprenticeship programme.  We have a legal obligation under equality legislation to ensure reasonable adjustments.  If you have any concerns about this, please contact data.funding@mmu.ac.uk in the first instance.

You are disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a “substantial” and “long-term” negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities.  “Long-term” means 12 months or more.  There are some conditions that are covered from the point of diagnosis eg. HIV, cancer, multiple sclerosis.  If you are unsure if you meet this definition please contact the Disability Service: 0161 247 3491 or email: disability.service@mmu.ac.uk

If you will be aged 19-24 at the start of your apprenticeship and you have an Education, Health and Care (EHC) Plan, statement of special educational need or a learning difficulty assessment and are willing to share this with us, please attach a copy.

Drop files here or click to browse.

We will not share information about your disability or health condition with your employer, unless you have provided consent for us to do so.  Where you have provided consent, this will enable us to include your employer in discussions with you to ensure that the support we are providing is suitable in helping you to successfully complete your apprenticeship.  It will also mean we can talk to your employer about any adjustments or support they can provide to support you with your apprenticeship, including where appropriate utilising the Access to Work scheme (www.gov.uk/access-to-work).

Care Leavers

The Government is keen to help remove barriers to accessing the apprenticeship scheme. Therefore, they offer a one time only £3,000 apprenticeships care leavers’ bursary to eligible apprentices. If you declare this and are a care leaver, then we will request evidence from you so the bursary can be claimed.

If you consent to us sharing information about your care leaver status with your employer, they may also be eligible for an additional £1,000 payment which they can spend on any costs associated with supporting an apprentice in the workplace.

If you have stated you are a care leaver, please provide a signed letter or email from a local authority appointed Personal Advisor to confirm you are a care leaver.
